About our Chair
Katie Nurmi (she/they) has been an active member of the State College community and a dedicated supporter of Centre LGBT+ since 2016. As Chair of the Education Committee, Katie brings decades of experience in community advocacy, training, and public education focused on equity and inclusion for marginalized communities.
In the late 1990s, while working within the battered women’s movement, Katie completed multicultural trainer certification through Cultural Bridges to Justice. Since then, they have facilitated numerous workshops, trainings, and presentations addressing diversity, inclusion, and social justice issues.
Katie believes that education is one of the most powerful tools for creating lasting social change, particularly within the LGBTQIA+ community. Guided by Maya Angelou’s words, “When we know better, we do better,” Katie is passionate about fostering opportunities for learning that encourage empathy, understanding, and affirmation. They believe community education allows people to be met where they are and invited into deeper awareness, compassion, and allyship.
In addition to their work with the Education Committee, Katie is a person of faith who serves as a deacon at State College Presbyterian Church and participates in the Faith Coalition through Centre LGBT+.
If you are interested in joining the education committee and providing LGBT+ education in our community applications will be out soon. In the meantime send your name/pronouns, email to cat@centrelgbtplus.org to be added to the list of interested folks.
